How it works

How The True Self works.

A calm, step-by-step way to reach the conversations that matter.

The format

Why this works.

The strength of the format is time and privacy. Face to face, there is no room to think and a lot of room to get it wrong.

Here, each person works things out in private first, at their own pace, with a guide to lean on, so that by the time anyone speaks out loud, the hardest part is already done.

A Room each. A Connecting Door that only opens when you choose. And a shared Balcony, for the conversations that matter most.

Step by step

What happens, in order.

  1. A doorway between two warmly lit rooms.
    01

    Set up your space.

Start your free trial, create your profile, and you have a Room of your own.

  2. A young person writing in a journal by a window.
    02

    Invite your young person.

Send them an invitation. They set up their own profile and get a private Room too. Your profiles are connected, but each Room stays private.

  3. Hands writing in a journal in soft window light.
    03

    Write in your Room.

Journal whenever you like. Teri may leave gentle thought prompts to help you begin. Nothing you write is shared unless you choose to share it.

  4. An open doorway with warm light spilling through.
    04

    Invite Teri in.

When you want support, share a thought with Teri. This opens a quiet, private conversation, just between you and her. She can share resources too. A short read, an exercise, a video, or a document to guide you.

  5. An open balcony at dusk with two chairs.
    05

    Step out to the Balcony.

When you are both ready, the Balcony is the shared space where you, your young person and Teri talk openly together. Short Openings or longer ones. In your own time.

What Teri does

A steady guide. Never a push.

Teri guides, never pushes. She can leave thought prompts for journaling, share resources into your Room (texts, images, videos, documents), join your private conversation when invited, and hold the Balcony conversation when you are both there. She takes no side. She is there to help each of you find your own words.

Privacy in depth

The only door is the one you choose to open.

Each Room is private to its owner. A parent cannot read a young person's Room, and a young person cannot read a parent's. Only Teri can be invited into a Room, and only by its owner. The Balcony is the only shared space, and everyone there knows who can see it.
